Tablet Application Design

Creating a tablet-based application to digitize the review process this client’s factory workers go through to verify the contents of shipments.

Team Makeup: Developer (Backend), Developer (Frontend), Project Manager, Scrum Master, Users for testing (Managers & Sales Representatives, UX Designer (Me)

Project Duration: 1 year

Tools Used: Figma, Illustrator, Client Design Library

The Problems

The current process for verifying a shipment’s contents takes too much time and causes too many user errors.

The client sends packages to all sorts of companies. When a company receives its shipment from the client, factory workers need to compare label specs to a sheet of paper that they have in their hands and manually check everything off. This worker then needs to have someone else manually look over and check off their work.

The Solutions

Create an application that would automate this process for both primary and secondary verifiers (Monitors and Verifiers).

Give each user a tablet dedicated to this application and train them on it to digitize, expedite, and reduce errors in the verification process.

User Dashboard

From the primary dashboard, users can:

  • View monitoring history

  • Begin a new monitoring session

  • Resume monitoring sessions they had in progress

  • Delete unfinished monitoring sessions

  • View secondary verification results of previously completed sessions

  • Power users can switch between multiple views (Monitor, Verifier)

Scanning a BARCODE

Product barcode scanning process:

  • User scans product barcode to pull up the product and its labels

  • User makes sure this is the right product

  • Once the product has been confirmed, user can see all the labels that are supposed to be associated with this product and verifies them one by one

User scans barcode

User confirms they have the right product

Scanning a Label

Product label scanning process:

  • User takes picture of label, confirms this is the picture they’d like to be associated with the report

  • Matching data fields will automatically check themselves off

  • Can add comments to data sheets if they need to

  • Once label has been verified, the user is brought back to label checklist so they can see what else needs to be completed

Matching data fields are automatically checked off

Verified label is now marked “verified” on label checklist

Verifier SCREENS

Verifier dashboard:

  • Checklist of monitoring sessions they need to verify

  • Can view if any items need urgent attention (i.e., if a crucial error was made in the monitoring process)

VERIFICATION DETAILS PAGE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Inspired by “Costco receipt” as you’re walking out of the store with your items

  • Can see all the details the monitor marked down

  • Can leave comments on a label-to-label basis

  • Can leave summary comments

  • Can submit or deny report

In Review

As expected, users report this application helped them minimize errors and speed up the time it took to verify incoming shipments in their factories.
